You Gotta Have Balls

Title: You Gotta Have Balls
Author: Lily Brett
Publisher: William Morrow

What an entertaining read! I love it. It is full of warmth and charm. Best of all, it is FUNNY!!!!!!!!!!

This is the second interesting book I have read this past month which touches on the lives of survivors of the Holocaust and their special human spirits. And the impact and effects of the Holocaust on the second generation born to their families.

While readers can identify with the Ruth, the letter-writing business woman and her various "worries", I can identify with Edek's need to live life to the fullest, even at 87 years old.

If Minds Had Toes

Title: If Minds Had Toes
Author: Lucy Eyre
Publisher: Bloomsbury Publishing

A quirky book by all means. But not quite as whimsical and charming as Sophie’s World by Jostein Gaarder which took the world by storm in the early 1990s. Nor as compelling.

Both books had a young protagonist in the centrestage, a clean slate upon which the ideas and ideals of philosophy were introduced. While we were literally taken into the heart of Sophie’s world by Gaarder and we get immersed along with her as she made her philosophical discoveries; Eyre’s only showed us a simple view of teenager Ben's life and dwelt simplistically on the surface of philosophical thought.

Nevertheless, If Minds Had Toes would serve well as an easy, entertaining read for anyone with some interest in exploring of the basics of philosophy without academic or intellectual pressures.

死神の精度 vs 死神的精确度

Title: 死神的精确度
Author: 伊坂辛太郎
Publisher: 獨步文化

The author 伊坂辛太郎 alluded in the book: "Angels gather in libraries, while Dealth loiter in CD records stores". He might as well be describling the reality of 死神の精度 vs 死神的精确度.

The book is special. It has passion. It has humor. It has sentimentalism. It has mystery. It has an unique sense of spirit. It has an understanding of life even when it is about Death.

The special elements of the book? Gone with the grim reaper.

What does the movie has? It has Takeshi Kaneshiro. It has a nice theme song. That's about it. Acccuracy of Dealth? Not quite

The Go Master 吴清源

This is the kind of movie that I relish. It is supremely restrained and has the ability to make me focus my energy and emotions deeply and acutely. I seem to retreat into a different space of contemplation. And emerged spiritually moved.

The Go Master pays respects to of Wu Qingyuan, a man who dedicated his entire life to the game of Go. Throughout the period of tumultuous world war 2 and and political upheaval, Wu's discipline and commitment remained.

This is not an easy film to appreciate and even more difficult to comprehend. It is deliberately slow and contemplative rather than dramatic and sensational. But gently and very quietly (I meant it - you can hear a pin drops in the silenced cinema), it captures and demands your attention. Drawing you in as you come face with face with the master 吴清源

Rise And Shine

Title: Rise and Shine
Author: Anna Quindlen
Publisher: Random House

"(She) has never been happy, not really. She has a little motor insider her, and it drives her. The problem with that is that when you have that kind of motor, there isn't really any destination. So then what do you do? you go as far as you can. But it's never quite far enough"

Sounds familiar? I bet it does. Either we identify ourselves with these thoughts or we associate them with someone we know. And often they are associated with someone close to us and we never acknowledge these emotions and often are saddened when they surfaced.

This book is about sisterhood, not just about siblings. Written with a touch of humor, this poignant story will remind us to stay close to those we love and who love us.

上学路上

This is a special movie. All the awards it has received confirmed the fact. It is the simple sincerity that moves me. The young actress (I ferevently hope she may never be ruined by commercial productions!) has a rare innocence beauty of spirit that brought the movie to life for me.
A mere RMB 24.80 was all it costs but the young protagonist struggled through her school vacation, displayed great enterprising attitude to earn it. It brought to mind how I too struggled and sought to earn an education for myself in my younger days. Though never as physically tested as much, I too faced many challenges.

The Alchemist

Title: The Alchemist
Author: Paulo Coelho
Publisher: HarperCollins Publishers

Paulo Coelho is

* Messenger of Peace for the United Nations

* Ambassador of European Union for Intercultural Dialogue

* Member of the Board of the Shimon Peres Institute for Peace

* UNESCO special counsellor for “Intercultural Dialogues and Spiritual Convergences

*The author of The Alchemist

This is one book that makes me want to be able to read Portuguese. To reach the spirit of this book and communicate with it personally. I call this book my soulmate. It speaks to me directly. It echoes my personal philosophy. It sustains my optimism. It reaffirms my beliefs.

Millions have read this book since its publications and thousands of book reviews have been written. There is no need to go into another review or preempt any other future readers' encounter with it. Everyone should discover The Alchemist for themselves. Instead, I share the following quotes:

A philosophy of life: I'm an adventurer, looking for treasure.

Everyone on earth has a treasure that awaits him.

Wherever your heart is, there you will find your treasure.

You've got to find the treasure, so that everything you have learned along the way can make sense.

When you possess great treasures within you, and try to tell others of them, seldom are you believed.

When you want something, all the universe conspires in helping you to achieve it.

There is only one way to learn. It's through action.

No one fails to suffer the consequences of everything under the sun.

No matter what he does, every person on earth plays a central role in the history of the world. And normally he doesn't know it.

It's the possibility of having a dream come true that makes life interesting.

There is only one thing that makes a dream impossible to achieve: the
fear of failure.

Courage is the quality most essential to understanding the language of the world.

Listen to your heart. It knows all things, because it came from the Soul of the World and it will one day return there.

Love is the force that transforms and improves the soul of the world.

Love is the pure language of the world...a language without words…the one true language of the universe. It requires no explanation, just as the universe needs none as it travels through endless time.

When we love, we always strive to become better than we are. When we strive to become better than we are, everything around us becomes better too.

Without love, dreams would have no meaning.

No heart has ever suffered when it goes in search of its dreams, because every second of the search is a second's encounter with God and with eternity.

Most people see the world as a threatening place, and because they do, the world
turns out indeed to be a threatening place.

If you can concentrate on the present, you'll be a happy man…the secret is here in the present. If you pay attention to the present, you can improve upon it. And if you improve on the present, what comes later will also be better.

Everyone seems to have a clear idea of how other people should lead their lives, but none about his or her own.

The world's greatest lie: At a certain point in our lives we lose control of what's happening to us and our lives become controlled by fate.

The existence of this world is simply a guarantee that there exists a world that is perfect.

This natural world is only an image and a copy of paradise.

Each day, in itself, brings with it an eternity.

Everything has been written by the same hand.

All things are one.

The Thirteenth Apostle

Title: The Thirteenth Apostle
Author: Michel Benoit
Publisher: Alma Books

Questioning the biblical role of Judas? Doubting the Divinity of Christ? Another conspiracy of the Catholic church and myth to the Templars' demise?

This novel, translated from French by Andrew brown (no relations to Dan Brown!) tells the story of an ancient sect and the Dead Sea Scrolls, hiding within the Secret of the 13th Apostle and challenges to the powers of the Catholic church.

For conspiracy theories junkies. Definitely NOT for folks already upset by the Da Vinci Code

God's Debris

Title: God's Debris: A Thought Experiment
Author: Scott Adams
Publisher: Andrews McMeel Publishing

This is a strange book. Strangely profound in the thoughts it provokes. On the one hand, it makes you ponder issues, making your head spin. On the other hand, you may throw your hands up, in mock despair, at the lack of clear answers or clues.

A Thought Experiment indeed.

Try it out if you like Dilbert, for that's what Adams is most well-known for. Read it even if you have never heard of Dilbert (What planet are you from?????). The ideas and hints within this little book may shine some light on those questions about our lives and beliefs that have remained unanswered for eons.

The Thirteenth Tale

Title: The Thirteenth Tale
Author:Diane Setterfield
Publisher: Atria Books

This book is about love of reading, the love of writing, the love of books and stories. A book for me.

A reader's book. This is one that brings back the nostalgic yearning for the fine art of story telling and writings in the grand style of du Maurier and the Brontes. A book that will grip you from the beginning and never quite let go at the end. The mystery captures you, the secrets shocked you and the protagonist bewitched you.

Where There's A Will

Title: Where There's A Will
Author : John Mortimer
Publisher: Penguin Books

"A worldly-wise, never world-weary, wonderfully entertaining, occasionally outrageous and always thought-provoking book" -that's what one reviewer said.

I could not agree more. I came to adore Mortimer from his Horace Rumpole writings and grew to love the protagonist and his antics, courtesy of BBC TV. The law could be ridiculous and funny at times and Rumpole exploited it to great hilarity!

In Where There's A Will, Mortimer pondered on inheritance he received: not just house and properties but other more precious stuffs – an approach to life and a view of our brief existence, and examined the kinds of things he would like to pass on in turn: the pleasures of drink, the justification for the odd lie, the belief in one’s ability to change one’s life, the absolute necessity of causing offence on occasion, and a vision of god as The Grand Perhaps.

Mortimer drew on his life as a barrister and writer – two occupations seemingly quite different yet both concerned with questions of truth and fiction, value and significance – and offered his readers and fans a comic account of what a decent life might be, based on the a number of key principles: from the importance of questioning the views of the majority to the desirability of wearing the clothes of one’s youth, even in old age.

I love Mortimer!

Nishimura Kyotaro 西村京太郎

Last year I attempted to read all the books of 宮部美幸and 森博嗣. This year, I am on a vegeance to devor all of Nishimura Kyotato 西村京太郎's books. So far, I have already read 6 of the books available at the local libraries

Kyotaro Nishimura is best known for his mystery novels. Graduated from Tokyo-to-ritsu Denkikogyo High School, he was a public official for many years before quiting to become a novelist .

In 1963, he won the All Yomimono Suiri Shosetsu Award for his novel, "Yuganda Asa" and then the Edogawa Ranpo Award for "Tenshi no Kizuato" in 1965. The latter dealt with prejudice against the handicapped. In 1978, his third novel "Shindai-tokkyu Satsujinjiken", the first novel that focused on train travel launched the series of novels termed "Travel-Mystery". This series became hugely popular, and he was awarded the Japan Detective Novelist Association Award in 1980.

The "Totsugawa Keibu" series is the most popular with the public and many of the novels have been adapted for television programmes.

Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day

This movie makes me feel good. From the beautiful set and costumes to the actors to the music. Ah, the music brought forth sentimentalism for a time gone by. A glamorous time on the verge of war. Perhaps why it makes the discovery of life and love so much more piognant.

Frances McDormand gave a stellar performance. At once strong and vulnerable. A perfect foil for Amy Adams. Both actors doing justice to Winifred Watson's book. Watch this movie and share my longing for a more beautiful time long past.

樱树抽芽时,想你!

Title: 樱树抽芽时,想你
Author:歌野晶午
Translator: 蔡憶雲
Publisher:商周出版

It has been a while since a book has this ability to surprise me. And what a surprise. The clues were laid throughout the book. Yet, one is still resoundingly astonished at the end. Its like being hit by a thunderbolt when the light is cast and the seemingly impossible facts revealed one by one.

I finally understood why the novel opened with that quote from famed chinese writer Lin Yu Tang:

人生的黄金时代藏在未来的老年里,
而不藏在过去的青春和天真的时期.

扮鬼臉

Title: 扮鬼臉
Author: 宮部美幸
Publisher: 獨步文化 出版

Another Miyabe novel that I cannot help but love. It is at once a historical play, a family drama, a ghost story, a crime thriller. Yet, the spirit (or should I say spirits?) of the entire story is about love and tenderness.

A young girl coming of age, poised between childhood and womanhood. A young soul with the sensitivity to see beyond into the metaphysical. She sees ghost. But there is little fear involved. Instead she develops affection for them and they reciprocate.

Aptly titled "making ghost faces", this novel is set in the historical capital city of Edo. It evokes nostalgic longing for a time long past, a time when life was simpler. Miyable brought the past to us in a tale that appeared to be juxtaposing romance, revenge and love. Yet, the twist at the end tells us this novel is all that and more.

Title : Deeper
Author: Jeff Long
Publisher : Atria Books

I first read Jeff Long's The Descent, the prequel to Deeper many years ago. It took a while for the story to settle in before I truly understood the parable. Then I read his Year Zero which I actually like.

And now came Deeper. Aptly titled for Long has certainly gone deeper. Not just underground. But in pursing the barely concealed track of politico commentary and his literally obsession with the devil. And I suspect China. Why else single out China as the only country to mention in a novel besides the United States. This is not a horror thriller, its a politcal horror book.

A dark book and not just because the protagonists were mainly underground.

The Wheel of Darkness

Title: The Wheel of Darkness
Author: Douglas Preston & Lincoln Child
Publisher: Grand Central Publishing

I am in two minds about this latest Pendergast instalment.

After eagerly awaiting the continuing adventures of the charismatic Pendergast, it gave me great pleasure to see Pendergast and Constance Greene again. Yet, stucked on the high seas with them along with a vague caricature of a Tibetian demon along with irritating passengers on a luxury cruise, all I got was a sinking feeling at the end.

What happened to the intrigue, plots and fascinatingly crafted characters of the earlier Pemdergast novels that have so many of us hooked?

I can only hope that the veiled promise of Constance becoming the mother of the next holy man can fulfill expectations in the next instalment by Preston & Child!

Bee Season

Title : Bee Season
Author : Myla Goldberg
Publisher : Harper Perennial

This is a piognant book. Told mostly through the eyes of a child, Elisa, it evoked innocent yet bittersweet sentiments. In some ways, it brought to my mind “To kill A Mockingbird”.

It began gently with Elisa’s surprising qualification in her school’s Spelling Bee competition and her sense of achievement at finally being embraced by her family of gifted individuals. Then it escalated as the family span out of control with its members caught within each own whirlwind. There was an aching sense of despair as various notions of love and personal faith started to be called into question. As each person's own crisis overflowed and became the source of sadness for the family.

Myla Goldberg’s debut work has also been made into a movie starring Richard Gere and Juliette Binoche, the latter translating the role of Miriam into a fragile porcelain on the threshold of heartbreak. This is one of the few instances when I find that words translated into motion picture can still retain magic.

Bee Season is a very special book to me - it somehow reminded me of myself as a child and my position within the family. Elisa’s dad Saul brought to mind, my grandfather. Like Elisa, words have mystical powers to me and as certain as I am as Aaron, I have always felt God’s presence in many places and spaces.

谨告犯人!

Title: 谨告犯人! Hannin Ni Tsugu
Author: 雫井脩介 Shusuke Shizukui
Translator:王蕴洁
Publisher: 獨步文化Cite Publishing

.榮獲第七屆大藪春彥獎!
.《週刊文春》2004「十大推理小說」第一名
.《週刊現代》2004「最有趣的書」第一名

An award-winning novel by Shusuke Shizukui, this book focused on police procedures and featured highly intensified scenes of the matching of wits between police officers and ciminals.

It opened with the kidnap and coldblooded murder of a child after a failed ransom attempt and the subsequent disgrace of the police officer inviolved. Six years later, a child serial killer surfaced and the protagonist卷島 was called upon to track down the murderer. Faced with his past career-cippling failure, societal expectations, unrelenting pursuit by the news media; 卷島 had to overcome immense pressures as he attempted to hunt down the killer.

A truly thrilling novel where the excitment never lets up, this is a hard-to-put-down read. It is a Japanese version of the famed American police-drama Law & Order!

推理小说 - 不公平的人,是谁?

Title : 推理小说 - 不公平的人,是谁?
Author : 秦建日子 Hata Takchiko
Translator : 江裕真
Publisher : 商周出版

This is the first novel by Hata Takchiko, one of the writers behind the popular Japanese TV drama "Hero" starring Takuya Kimura.

The concept of this mystery-thriller is unique, a departure from the norm of most Japanese books in the genre. The premise of the book is based on the question of "Fairness" as evident in its subtitle. As we all are sadly aware, fairness does not always equate with justice

There are many philosophical observations found in this novel:

- 不公平的行为,经长是假借[正义]之名而做出来的.
- 批评没有才能的人也没什么意义.
- 人生没有到可以让你重复犯同样的错.
- 人活着的时候再怎么帤力,从死去的那一瞬间起,大家就会渐渐忘记他.
- 大家每天都有自己的事要忙,就会忘记你.
- [活的象自己]这件事,永不嫌太迟.
- 只要肯下决心,人生就能改变.

This book has now been dramatized into a TV serial as well.

十字火燄

Title: 十字火燄Crossfire
Author: 宫部美幸
Translator: 刘子倩
Publisher: 独步文化

I read the Taiwanese Chinese version of this book even though the English translated copy is available. This is because I feel the Chinese translation is somehow closely in emotions and spirit to the Japanese original.

I started my attempt to read all of Miyabe's books in 2007 and have now almost completed all the copies available in NLB branches. An awarding winning author, Miyabe's range of subject matters is quite diverse and substantial. From mysteries, police procedural, crime thrillers to mythologies, horror stories to fantasy and science fiction. Miyabe is also known for 勇者物语 Brave Story which was made into a Japanese animation movie.

Miyabe’s books offer readers an unique view of Japan society, delving into social concerns such as credit card debt, demise of traditional family structure, marginalization of minority members of society. Peppered with interesting characters and plotting, her novels make engrossing reads.

Cross fire's main heroine is young girl named 青木淳子 Aoki Junko, who has psychokinetic power. She took it about herself to use her special abilities to rid the world of criminals. She simply incinerated them! Pursued by the arson division of the Tokyo Metropolitan Police and a secretive vigilante group that wants to recruit her, Junko attempted to rescue a woman kidnapped by juvenile delinquents.

While Junko may have superpowers like some of Stephen King's characters, don't expect Crossfire to be in the same genre as King's novels.

Finding Grace When You Can't Even Find Clean Underwear: The Meaning of Life and Why Other People are So *#$%@! Annoying

Title: Finding Grace When you Can't Even Find Clean Underwear: The Meaning of Life and Why Other People are So *#$%@! Annoying
Author: Lisa Earle McLeod
Publisher: Jefferson Press

What a book! It speaks such universal truths to me. About the meaning of life, men, relationships, politics, career, personal growth, war and peace, living and loving. And yes, even religion. Yes, all the serious matters that concern you and I. But don't get me wrong, this book can be HILARIOUS at times.

I have now found the one author who can make me laugh while feeling spirituality touched at the same time, in so many ways. I mean, if the title of this book fails to give you a hint, surely the chapter headings would tell you what to expect? Chapters like:

- What is the meaning of life & where did I leave the keys?
- Why do men resist change and why do women bother to try?
- Does Buddha need botox?
- Is your brain ruining your life?
- Does Santa Claus get anxiety attacks?
- Is religion stealing our spirituality?
- Is God a small, sassy black woman?

Finding Grace offers not only an intelligence and insightful look into life, it serves up wicked wit at every turn, even when tackling serious issues. To paraphrase the author, I urge anyone out there to read it so that we may find the grace to ignite the spark of divinity within us and answer God's call to become the people we are capable of beings.

Le Grand Chef

Now I am left wondering how this ended up being the top-grossing movie in Korea. It is an adequate screen attempt, but by no means spectacular.

The acting by the male lead was stiff and not exactly funny. The supporting acts were giving far more stellar performances. Perhaps the star was afraid of tipping his dreamboat image. Then there is that bumbling female lead with her ever-present camera.

The most interesting parts for me were those involving the cooking sequences of the culinary contest. However, I think I much preferred those found in Dae Jang Kaem. And the scene that would stay with me? The one of the Emperor crying over the Royal Chef's bowl of beef soup. Therein lies not only the ingredients of a great culinary creation, but the making of a truly great movie!

Kinky Boots

Stumbled upon this gem of a comedy-drama while channel-surfing. Not surprised that it was never screened locally, given the "staid" attitude of some of our cinema chains when it comes to procuring lesser-known independent films. And with a title of Kinky Boots to boot (pun fully intended)? Which was a shame, because the moral of this tale is something Singaporeans should learn about. Buried in the midst of the laughs and "glamour" of the shoe business, is a lesson about discrimination.

It was inspired by a true story about a men's footwear factory in conservative Northamptonshire which turned to the production of kinky boots in a bid to rescue an ailing family business and safeguard the jobs of the local community. The premise and "kink" part reminded me a little of the Full Monty.

Enjoyable and fun, yet touched by poignancy.

No Humans Involved

Title: No Humans Involved
Author: Kelly Armstrong
Publisher: Random House

This is the 7th book in Armstrong's "Women of the Otherworld" series. Perfect for fans of such TV series as Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Supernatural, Charmed, Ghost Whisperer, etc.

It isn't exactly horror of the Stephen King genre. Its a supernatural mystery-thriller simply for light-weight fun. Not to be taken seriously. Despite the myriad of supernatural creatures - necromancers, werewolves, ghosts, angels and even a demons or two prancing around, no reader is going to be scared or terrified. Kelley Armstrong does not dwell deep into the psyche of these creatures and spirits, she simply creates a world where they co-exist with unsuspecting humans and have their own share of problems, just like you and I.

No Human Involved starred Jaime Vegas, a bit character in Armstrong's earlier books in the series. Vivacious, flirty and funny and with a penchant to talk to ghosts. She makes this book an easy and breezy read for anyone.

Welcome to the Great Mysterious

Title : Welcome to the Great Mysterious
Author : Lorna Landvik
Publisher : Bantam Books

While the diva in this book is Geneva, the star is Conrad, as far as I am concerned. There are many special people in this novel by Lorna Landvik, but none as special as Conrad and his pal Rick. Special in that magical way – able to see the world through simple, pure, straight-forward eyes, they are the ones who appear to be in tune with the Great Mysterious while the rest of the world get caught up with the complications they have created in their own lives.

The Great Mysterious is the unique way by which characters in this book attempt to seek answers to the mysteries of life. It does not attempt to preach, but makes commendable effort to advice, explain and comfort.

Welcome to the Great Mysterious, a book with a big-heart and kind soul.

Sepulchre

Title : Sepulchre
Author : Kate Mosse
Publisher : Orion Books

A tale of lives intertwined, the past and the present brought together by a set of Tarot cards. Kat Moss once again employed the approach she took with Labyrinth, introducing us to two heroines across the space of time, each attempting to interpret the cards they have been dealt.

This new novel has all the intriguing elements – music & myths, spirits & demons, romance & passion, obsession & revenge. Yet somehow, for all its length, its fall short in depth.

Being Cyrus

I caught this interesting movie on Arts Central. Although there are apparently famed actors of Indian cinemas lending their talents to this movie, I have no idea who they are. However, this is precisely why I like such a movie - it allow me to focus on the story and screen presentation rather than the individual "faces".

Being Cyrus caught in its web the naunces of a family with a almost Athenian-like tragic favor. Yet in its heart, there are many sins - of adultery, of disloyalty, of betrayal between husband and wife, fathers and sons, siblings. And of a crime.

Watch it! It will definely purge you of all the stereotypical scenes of songs and dances around trees in typical Bollywood movies.

色.戒

Despite all the hype over Ang Lee's latest offering, I was not in the least bit inclined to watch it any day soon. But then Godzilla kept asking whether we have watched it, so I decided to have a go at it.

Let me first state that I am quite non-discriminatory when it comes to movies. I watch all kinds - comedy, horror, thriller, art house, animation, foreign language, etc. For me, if movies failed at being entertaining, then they must be engaging and thought provoking. If a flick is really good, I will secure a DVD and do deep analysis on it, try to figure out what message the director is trying to get through, how roles are interpreted and symbolism incorporated.

I do not, however, like movies that try too hard, with directors and actors too conscious and aware of their efforts. I dislike movies that are made for the media, not the audience. And especially detest movies that are overly remote, repressive; keeping audience at bay like a voyeur, unable to connect and resonate with true emotions. Frustrating describes these movies, while agonising captures the audience.

So, it should be no surprise that the only thing that truly intrigues me in this movie is the role played by Joan Chen. In the middle of the entire affair, yet seemingly unaware or deliberately unaffected. Which by some strange reason, I keep thinking is the exact same role Ang Lee is understudying for!

As for those much touted scenes that have the local media and my fellow citizens titillated and disaffected - what's the big deal? It's all part of characterization. The title of this very movie posts a most appropriate warning to folks flocking to the movie because they are excited by those few minutes of physical acrobatics for all the wrong reasons. Lust: proceed with caution. Gratification will be painfully slow.

The Last Testament

Title: The Last Testament
Author: Sam Bourne
Publisher: Harper

In the midst of continual tensions in the Middle East, this book posed the all-important question. What if Abraham left a last will and testament for his sons and descendants. Who would then has the rights to the holy site - Jews, Muslims or Christians? How would the Israelites and Palestinians react. And a even more pertinent question : What role would the United States of America play then? Who is on the right side? Who must be sacrificed? In the end, it may be all of God's children.

Read this thriller for your entertainment, then entertain the questions with your thoughts.

The Sleeping Doll

Title: The Sleeping Doll
Author: Jeffery Deaver
Publisher: Simon & Schuster Adult Publishing Group

To be frank, I am disappointed with this book. I first started reading Deaver with The Bone Collector, and got hooked on the series featuring Lincoln Rhyme. But this new offering? I think its lame or as some reviewer puts it - a piece of ham!

Well, I can see it being translated into a Hollywood film - its has all the ingredients, - the brave heroine, the car chase, bombs and gun fires, the villain (modeled after Charles Manson no less, but Manson's crimes were far more heinous!), the obvious twist (I am barely able to say it surprise me at all...). But somehow, it does not have the depth or intelligence of Deaver's earlier works featuring Rhyme.

I Feel Bad About My Neck

Title : I feel Bad About My Neck
Author : Nora Ephron
Publisher : Alfred A. Knopf

A candid and funny take on aging “gracefully”. Nora may offer slices of lives in New York but the experiences she shares are universal. Title : Angry Housewives Eating Bon Bons

I love this book. You will traverse the trenches of daily life with faith and find God in the most extraordinary of women. Along the way, you meet a little slip of a thing that is fiercely dedicated to causes of society and life at large, a lady whose courage merit your admiration and the most caring Kari. With the simplest of language and easy prose, Lorna Landvik captures wit, humor, sadness and takes you on a profound emotional journey that will chronicle three decades in the lives of the ladies of the book club at Freesia Court.
